Fuel Storage
In order to be secure, the smaller fuel canisters or the big refueling tank has to be stored away from the main complex or building. Adding to the safety aspect, it is vital that "No Smoking" signs are prominently displayed in the area. Ideally, the fuel tanks must be stored in a secure enclosure which can only be accessible by authorized employees. It is vital for the safety of the operator, and everybody they work with, that these safety measures are strictly followed.
The fuel enclosure itself needs to be protected from vehicle impact. Using retaining systems such as concrete bumpers for instance, can carry out this task. Other retaining methods can be utilized. It is also important to have a fire extinguisher available at the refueling station. Additionally, anyone who is operating the fueling station should be trained and also should be trained to effectively and safely operate the fire extinguisher. With regards to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires that all operators utilizing a forklift should be properly trained. This training includes a classroom portion in addition to hands-on training. When finishing the training session, the person must be tested to be able to prove that they understand the training materials. A portion of this training also includes the correct way of the refueling process of the lift truck. The training also includes precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they could be driving as well as site-specific procedures.
Medical Treatment
Material Safety Data Sheet or MSDS should be situated in all facilities where forklifts are operating. This center will include the MSDSs for all chemicals and solvents which are used on site. This will also cover the acid in the lift truck battery, together with the propane that is used to refuel the unit.
MSDSs sheets need to be available for all workers all the time. If any exposure incident happens for example, the person needs to be evaluated immediately. If any medical attention is considered necessary, to must be given without any delay. Generally, if you are not certain if medical care is considered necessary, as a general rule; have a medical doctor examine the injury if you truly think it is severe. Always better to be safe than sorry.
